Romans 8:28 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

This seems to be a favorite verse for Christians. It’s one of those feel-good verses that we are quick to throw out to others, or scribble on a note of encouragement. But when you’re the one in the thick of things, this verse is not always as easy to believe.

When your plans fail.

When the doctor has bad news.

When your prayers seem to go unanswered.

Then what?

Well, one thing we can do is look to men and women with great Christian testimonies. Because for every great testimony, you will find that disappointments, bad news, and suffering were part of the story. Those richest in faith have often faced the greatest obstacles at one point or another.

The beautiful part of any committed Christian’s story is most often looking back: When you see that a closed door really did lend opportunity for a new one to open. When you find that there really were great blessings because of a season of suffering. When you see that without a doubt God’s hand was there–working through people and circumstances to fulfill His purposes in and through you.

If you are in a challenging season, I pray that Romans 8:28 might come alive for you in a personal way. It is not just a cliche Christian phrase. It is the Word of God. And it is truth. Keep your eyes fixed on the author and perfecter of your faith. And one day you will see that indeed He did work all things together for good.
