1 THESSALONIANS 5:16 “REJOICE ALWAYS.”

Some people are by nature happier than others.  Some wake up most days in a generally good mood.  Others might need to think hard of a reason to smile as they start their day.  Circumstances also direct our emotions:  When things are going well, it is easy for me to be full of joy.  When circumstances are rough, I might struggle to feel happy.

The Word of God however, tells us TO REJOICENOT when we wake up on the right side of the bed, or when things are going our way, but….ALWAYS.  Always?  Yes.  Always.   We are not simply encouraged, but INSTRUCTED to REJOICE ALWAYS, and even more to GIVE THANKS in all circumstances. (verse 18.)

This command does not require us to possess a certain personality type, or for circumstances to go our way.  Instead, this command takes FAITH.  Stopping in the midst of a stressful day, or a challenging situation, and finding something to be thankful for requires us to first acknowledge that God is bigger than it all, and ultimately in control.  Speaking out in gratitude and even singing songs of praise when we don’t FEEL LIKE IT, is really just a love offering to the One who gave us our very life and breath.

It is true that the simple act of SMILING releases endorphins that improve our mood and attitude.  I don’t think that is a coincidence!  In fact, I think it is just like God to ask us to Rejoice always, and then when we do so by faith, to bless us with good feelings.

So take joy today!  As an act of obedience, be thankful, rejoice, even sing songs of praise.  Smile on purpose, and then go from there.
