“But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’ ”-James 4:6

Aaron Gold, who is featured in this month’s newsletter, has many great qualities, but one word that might describe him best is humility. This character trait is very refreshing in this world driven by pride and self promotion. Most people are striving to get noticed, be first, and stand out in front of everyone else. While humility can seem like a long-forgotten virtue.

But the Word of God is timeless. All throughout Scripture humility is lifted up as one of the highest qualities. The book of Proverbs is full of wisdom principles, many of which point to humility as the pathway to wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.)

Jesus himself was our greatest example of humility. Philippians 2:8 describes Jesus with these words: “being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death– even death on a cross!”

Aaron Gold has walked with the Lord, in quiet humility for years. He is known to most often surf big waves not for the cameras, or for the crowds, but quietly, and often all alone. He has worked hard, been faithful, and patiently waited for God to give him the best waves and to provide him with the right opportunities.

It is a huge encouragement to see Aaron’s humility and hard work be rewarded in God’s timing. Currently, Aaron is being noticed, promoted, and lifted up in the world of surfing. What an inspiration.

Let’s be careful not to conform to the world’s ways, but instead to keep following God’s timeless principles. When we choose to walk in humility, we are positioning ourselves for God’s favor.
