“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” -Galatians 5:25

In Bethany Hamilton’s Q and A, she points out that every step we take leads us in the direction we will go. “Positive steps will lead you in a positive direction, and bad steps can take you in a bad direction.” I love this because it demonstrates how very simple it is to stay out of trouble, live a life that honors God, and enjoy the blessings that come with it.

Galatians 5: 16-17 gives us further direction on how to stay in God’s will: “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.”

The Christian faith is not about making a one-time decision and then carrying on with life. Instead, it is about making on-going decisions, every day, to keep in step with the Spirit. Making choices that honor God in the big and little decisions of our life will keep us in step with the Spirit. The natural result is that we are drawn away from the things of the flesh, or as Bethany simply called it, the “bad steps that lead us in bad directions.”

Instead of focusing on avoiding the desires of the flesh, we can focus on the positive act of keeping in step with the Spirit. Every step matters, so let’s keep in step with the Spirit and enjoy God’s blessings today.
