“Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:4-6

C.S Lewis claims, “There is one vice of which no man in the world is free; which every one in the world loathes when he sees it in someone else; and of which hardly any people, except Christians, ever imagine that they are guilty themselves…The vice I am talking of is Pride or Self-Conceit: and the virtue opposite to it, in Christian morals, is called Humility…According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride…it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind.”  True humility, rather, is the absence of Pride and the mindset that, “I no longer live but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20)

John the Baptist captures the essence of humility in his statement, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 30 (NKJV) “I MUST DECREASE” – What a countercultural statement that is in our society today, which unashamedly promotes the false virtues of pride and self-entitlement. The world around us preaches that we are entitled to “good things” such as a happy, profitable and healthy life and unfortunately, even as believers, we are often deceived by this lie. However, the truth is we are entitled to NOTHING. When we embrace this truth and realize that literally everything is a gift from God- down to each breath we take in- our lives will look drastically different; we will be freed from the bondage of pride and will be enabled to be humble stewards of the “gifts” God has bestowed upon each of us. He will increase and we will decrease.
