Two weeks before Bryan Jennings traveled to Rio, Brazil with 3X World Champion Tom Curren, He watched a powerful youtube video produced by Bruno Productions about a blind surfer who surfed pipeline. “I was absolutely amazed and inspired.” Derek Rabelo, the blind surfer from that video is from Brazil and was scheduled to be a special guest at the Walking On Water movie outreach in Rio, Brazil. The day after the event, Bryan, Derek and the other special guests from the movie outreach, Tom Curren, Damien Hobgood and Lakey Peterson all went surfing together. Each were amazed at Derek’s ability to surf despite being blind but were even more touched by his Faith in Jesus Christ.
“What I didn't know, at the time,” Bryan shares, “was that God had a bigger plan as always. I met Bruno Lemos and his Bruno Productions film crew who were already working on Derek's movie and we began to talk about partnering up to make a movie about Derek. When I returned home from Brazil I could not stop thinking about Derek and his powerful testimony. God then made it very clear through some miraculous circumstances that Derek's story would be our next Walking On Water film titled, BEYOND SIGHT and the theme of the movie would be based on 2 Corinthians 5:7 which says, "We are to live by faith, NOT by sight." We have teamed up with Bruno Productions who created the original youtube video of Derek to produce Beyond Sight. Please read below for the film synopsis.
Amidst the small beautiful city of Guarapari, Brazil, Derek Rabelo's father prayed that his son would become a famous professional surfer. His father named his son after the legendary Pipeline surfer Derek Ho, the embodiment of his dream. Unfortunately on May 25th 1992, his prayer seemed unanswered when Derek was born blind. Seventeen years later Derek decided that despite his blindness he still wanted to surf and that he wanted to surf Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu. Through the encouragement of his parents, best friend, and surf coach, Derek embarked on a three-year journey of grueling mental, physical and spiritual training. Join Derek as he perseveres towards his goal of surfing Pipeline and along the way inspires the best surfers in the world including Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez, Tom Curren, Damien Hobgood, Derek Ho, Laird Hamilton, Lakey Peterson, Coco Ho, and the entire surfing world. You will learn from Derek's story that the best journeys in life are walked by faith, and not by sight.
The Beyond Sight production is off to a great start! Less than two weeks ago, Derek arrived in California and since then we have had an incredible time filming the Beyond Sight movie. During his stay we have miraculously been able to film with Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Damien Hobgood, Laird Hamilton, Coco Ho, and Lakey Peterson. Surfer Magazine had "Slater Leads The Blind" story as their top story all week (http://www.surfermag.com/features/slater-leads-the-blind/). The San Diego Union Tribune also did a great article about Derek (http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/jul/27/seeing-through-blind-surfer/).
