Running length:
Produced by: Walking On Water

Derek Rabelo (blind surfer) arrived in California less than two weeks ago and we have had an incredible time filming the Beyond Sight movie.  During the past 8 days we have miraculously been able to film with Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Damien Hobgood, Laird Hamilton, Coco Ho, and Lakey Peterson.  Surfer Magazine had “Slater Leads The Blind” story as their top story all week (  The San Diego Union Tribune did a great article about Derek as well (  So the Beyond Sight production is off to a great start!  Please share the link to this website with friends so they can view the trailer and support the movie.

Amidst the small beautiful city of Guarapari, Brazil, Derek Rabelo’s father prayed that his son would become a famous professional surfer.  His father named his son after the legendary Pipeline surfer Derek Ho, the embodiment of his dream.  Unfortunately on May 25th 1992, his prayer seemed unanswered when Derek was born blind.  Seventeen years later Derek decided that despite his blindness he still wanted to surf and that he wanted to surf Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu.  Through the encouragement of his parents, best friend, and surf coach, Derek embarked on a three-year journey of grueling mental, physical and spiritual training.  Join Derek as he perseveres towards his goal of surfing Pipeline and along the way inspires the best surfers in the world including Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez, Tom Curren, Damien Hobgood, Derek Ho, Laird Hamilton, Lakey Peterson, Coco Ho, and the entire surfing world.  You will learn from Derek’s story that the best journeys in life are walked by faith, and not by sight.

Two weeks before I traveled to Rio, Brazil with 3X World Champion Tom Curren, I watched a powerful online short video about a blind surfer who surfed pipeline.  I was absolutely amazed and inspired.  What I didn’t know was that God had a bigger plan as always.  The blind surfer’s name was Derek Rabelo and he was from Brazil and was scheduled to be a special guest at our Walking On Water movie outreach in Rio, Brazil.  Even though we had Tom Curren, Damien Hobgood and Lakey Peterson, the crowd was also very impressed with Derek the blind surfer who surfed pipeline.

The next day we all went surfing and were amazed to see Derek surf and I was equally as impressed with his faith in Jesus Christ.  When I returned home from Brazil I could not stop thinking about Derek and his powerful testimony.  God then made it very clear through some miraculous circumstances that Derek’s story would be our next Walking On Water film and the theme of the movie would be based on 2 Corinthians 5:7 which says, “We are to live by faith, NOT by sight.”  The title of the movie is BEYOND SIGHT.

I hope you enjoy the Beyond Sight trailer we have put together!  This will be the 12th surfing documentary that Walking On Water films has produced over the past 15 years.  I am so excited about this movie!  To see our other films including Bethany Hamilton’s Heart of a Soul Surfer go here:
