When we take to the water to surf with the Friends of Bethany Hamilton Organization for their Beautifully Flawed Retreat, it is impossible for onlookers and beachgoers to walk by without stopping and watching in amazement. For the past 3 years we have been blessed to facilitate the surfing for the Beautifully Flawed Retreat put on by the Friends of Bethany Hamilton Organization. It is a weekend long retreat for a group of young amputee women. The girls are flown in from all over the nation to be encouraged and inspired. Each girl has a unique and traumatic story to tell. However, the strength and perseverance that these young women display is humbling. Once we get in the water, it is not about focusing on “disabilities” it is about “modifying” your surfing style in the proper way in order to make a wave all the way to shore with the highest level of stoke! Earlier this month, with the help of more than 20 volunteers, we gave each of the 26 girls an opportunity to experience the unique and free feeling of surfing. We loved watching the uncontrollable smiles on the girls faces. In all, everyone walked away inspired with a new perspective on life and our abilities. We are all just a group of God’s wonderfully made, beautifully flawed children. This was definitely one of our favorite surf sessions this year!
