Thank you for all of the prayers and support of the camps! Thank you to all the families who sent their children, or referred their friends! It has been amazing to see God at work over these past six weeks.
For the first time we ran Day Camps at La Jolla Shores, which was a huge success. We had the incredible opportunity of baptizing 18 campers during those first two weeks! You can bet we will be back in La Jolla doing Day Camps next summer!
Our Jr. High and High School Overnight Camps were incredibly blessed. Guest speakers Nic Gilmoure, the Mission’s Pastor of North Coast Calvary Chapel, Joel Parker of Nations Foundation, and Professional Surfer/Funnyman Dave Yearwood all spoke powerful messages of Faith conquering Fear. During one night of camp we finished our last worship song, but you could tell the campers wanted more. We decided to extend our worship time and got to watch as 50 young people shouted praise to God at the top of their lungs. It. Was. Powerful. One mom sent us this email after camp ended, “What did you do to my son!? He came home on fire for the Lord and on fire for life! You guys are awesome. He even talked about feeling Gods presence during worship and making better, closer friends in one week than he has in his lifetime - Praise God!”
This summer we have seen God provide in so many beautiful ways. We hope that you can join us for one of our Leadership Camps, Mission Trips, and also for Summer Camp next year!!!1 Discuss & Comment
It is absolutely incredible to see what God will do when we are willing to take the first small step of faith. I had no idea what God would do through our small surf camp we hosted twenty years ago! God truly is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine! At our leadership retreat in Kauai a few months ago, I was sharing about all that God has done and how HE has worked! We have simply stopped to listen and inquire of the Lord, and as we He leads, we have stepped out in faith. As we step out in faith, He then leads even more clearly, and we see HIS blessings!
The first camp had ten students attend, and since then thousands of campers have attended the Walking On Water Surf Camps over the past 20 years! It has been an honor to share the sport we love, and more importantly our faith in Jesus Christ with this generation! We look forward to many more years of surf camps in many countries, movie production, movie outreaches, and mission trips! Thank you to everyone who has helped us in so many ways over the years!!!0 Discuss & Comment
Surf Camps have been amazing so far this summer! More than 200 students have attended our various camps. These campers have heard awesome messages of faith from people like professional surfer Damien Hobgood, John Cobian of Cobian Sandals, evangelist and filmmaker Joel Parker of Nations Foundation, and many more. We have been blessed to watch approximately 55 campers start relationships with the Lord or recommit their lives to Him. In addition, Walking On Water has had the privilege of participating in the baptism of 19 students at camps during this summer alone! God is moving! There is one more camp left in the 2014 Walking On Water Surf Camp season. However, having just finished our Jr. High and High School Overnight Camps at Pt. Loma Nazarene University, it has been a blessing to reflect on the impact and transformation seen in camper's hearts. Both the counselors and Walking On Water staff witnessed God move in powerful ways at the Overnight Camps. We had the joy of standing alongside 50 Jr. Higher's in week 1 and then 60 High Schoolers in week 2 letting go of their fears and worshiping God with incredible passion - passion that can only be fueled by the Lord. The theme of the camp was "God is Jealous for Your Love". This message was definitely heard by the campers, as many of them wrote in their letter to themselves that in 6 months they want their relationship with the Lord to be the most important thing in their life. God is jealous for their love. He put it on our heart to share this with these students, but our prayer is that this is a message that sinks deep within your heart as well.0 Discuss & Comment
Katie Roche attended the Walking On Water Surf Camp last summer where she says she found her faith in the Lord. It was at this camp that she learned very tangibly from Derek Rabelo (blind surfer) to live out 1 Corinthians 5:7 and "live by faith, not by sight". Katie explains that shortly after camp this message of faith would became both a challenge and a necessity for her, as she lost her best friend, Claire, to a gunmen who entered their High School campus. It was nothing short of a tragedy, in which Katie describes she endured much hardship and many battles in her faith. She says, "I found my faith at Walking On Water Surf Camp and I remind myself to live by faith and not by sight. Getting support from my WOW family has been a huge help and I feel so incredibly blessed to have them in my life!" Earlier this month Katie graduated from Arapahoe High School where she was given the privilege of being the the keynote speaker at her graduation ceremony. We understand she rocked it, even taking a selfie with her senior class in the background! She is now off to Chapman University to study International Business and Pre-med.0 Discuss & Comment
At Walking On Water Surf Camp this last summer, Nick, Chad and Clay – along with the rest of the camp – received a challenge from Bryan Jennings to take a step of faith and find a mission trip to be a part of. Chad recounts, “Jesus told his disciples in Matthew 28:19 to go out into the world and make disciples, so that was going to be the next huge step in my Christian life.” After hearing this message, and being encouraged by their camp counselor, Sheadon Ringor, the three boys decided to take that challenge to heart, and pursue that next step of faith. The results were “immeasurably greater than we could have asked or imagined” (Ephesians 3:20).
“Even though we could not speak Spanish very well that language barrier disappeared when we went surfing with the kids. We would tell a couple kids that we were going to surf later and when we would get out in the water there would be just a few of us, then within 30 minutes there would be a whole mob of little kids laughing and surfing with us out in the line up.” –Nick Coons on his experience in El Salvador with Walking On Water
Chad, a great surfer and natural leader, was used by God to build relationships with the youth of El Zonte, El Salvador, both in and out of the water. His response was this, “It made me appreciate the path that God has for me; to use my surfing for spreading the word of the gospel. The trip impacted me that God has so much in store for me.”
Clay, a great surfer as well, with a humble and determined desire to serve God and love others, reflects on the trip, “This missions trip has allowed me to realize that God uses you in amazing ways that you would never realize. This trip really changed my mind set on life and made me want to be all in serving God.”0 Discuss & Comment
Beautifully Flawed Retreat
Friends of Bethany Hamilton hosted a weekend retreat for young women with limb loss. Walking on Water and Surf Sessions hosted the surf lesson for the first annual Beautifully Flawed retreat on Saturday, October 5, 2013. The girls were nervous and excited as they watch a demonstration by pro surfer and fellow amputee, Bethany Hamilton. Anticipation soon turned to reality as each girl hit the water accompanied by volunteer surfers and lifeguards. The waves at Del Mar beach were the perfect size for learning and every girl inspired the beach by their courage, perseverance, and joy in riding waves! A few of the girls shocked us by their natural talent and even charged some waves on the outside!
“When we were planning the Beautifully Flawed retreat, we wanted it to be evangelistic, inspirational, and practical. I am thrilled to say that after the weekend is over, we accomplished each of these goals.
Many of the girls and their families have told me that the retreat was life changing for them.
Bethany and Lauren are able to relate to and speak to these young women in a way few other people can. Overall, we were all blown away with the weekend and the effects it had on all the girls and all of our staff as well!” Katie Ancheta, Friends of Bethany Hamilton Foundation
"I could not believe how well the girls did! Bethany and I were both expecting them to need much more help than they did! It was one of the most inspirational things I have ever seen in Surfing." Bryan Jennings0 Discuss & Comment
