The Walking On Water/AMG International mission team has returned safely and with much excitement and encouragement at the work being done abroad. Our team consisted of 21 Southern California natives sent out on a mission to spread the powerful love of Jesus Christ to the people of El Zonte, El Salvador.
Each day would generally consist of rising early for the magnificent sunrise over the ocean, which El Zonte borders. A surf session, breakfast, individual devotional time, and then we were off across the river for an exhausting few hours of Vacation Bible School. There was an average of 50-60 kids each day at the Vacation Bible School. This year’s theme was finding strength in the Lord and allowing Him to help us overcome our fears. After the Vacation Bible School our team would eat lunch, and then some would surf with the locals until sunset or sunburn kicked in, while others would play games on the beach with the non-surfing locals. Three Walking On Water Surf Campers came on the trip and were used by the Lord in incredible ways to build relationships with the local youth surfers. The boys fixed tattered surfboards and handed out clothes they had brought; they were truly lights of Christ’s love. The day would close with dinner at a local restaurant, team devotional, and much needed sleep.
A huge thank you to all of our prayer warriors, and to the companies who helped sponsor our Christian Surfers/Walking On Water Surf Contest: Z-Flex Skateboards, Cobian Sandals, RUE, Billabong, and On A Mission. A specific thank you to Beautiful Feet and Cobian Sandals for providing 200 sandals, which were handed out to local women as our team members gave pedicures.
Finally, the biggest shout out to Amy Giffin, our dear friend, team member and sister in Christ who has Cerebral Palsy, but who also surfed for the first time while in El Zonte!0 Discuss & Comment
At Walking On Water Surf Camp this last summer, Nick, Chad and Clay – along with the rest of the camp – received a challenge from Bryan Jennings to take a step of faith and find a mission trip to be a part of. Chad recounts, “Jesus told his disciples in Matthew 28:19 to go out into the world and make disciples, so that was going to be the next huge step in my Christian life.” After hearing this message, and being encouraged by their camp counselor, Sheadon Ringor, the three boys decided to take that challenge to heart, and pursue that next step of faith. The results were “immeasurably greater than we could have asked or imagined” (Ephesians 3:20).
“Even though we could not speak Spanish very well that language barrier disappeared when we went surfing with the kids. We would tell a couple kids that we were going to surf later and when we would get out in the water there would be just a few of us, then within 30 minutes there would be a whole mob of little kids laughing and surfing with us out in the line up.” –Nick Coons on his experience in El Salvador with Walking On Water
Chad, a great surfer and natural leader, was used by God to build relationships with the youth of El Zonte, El Salvador, both in and out of the water. His response was this, “It made me appreciate the path that God has for me; to use my surfing for spreading the word of the gospel. The trip impacted me that God has so much in store for me.”
Clay, a great surfer as well, with a humble and determined desire to serve God and love others, reflects on the trip, “This missions trip has allowed me to realize that God uses you in amazing ways that you would never realize. This trip really changed my mind set on life and made me want to be all in serving God.”0 Discuss & Comment
Japan Mission Trip Update
Last month we accomplished our 10th annual summer mission trip to Japan! This years trip brought eight members from Christian Surfers Japan (CSJ), eight members from Walking On Water and one 3x world surf champion--Tom Curren to Sendai Japan, to reach out to the surfers who were greatly effected by the tsunami. It was truly another amazing year in Japan as we served alongside our friends from CSJ. Japan is one of the most unreached countries in the world with the gospel. It is less than a half of one percent Christian--in other words 99.5% of the Japanese people do not know Jesus. There are more surfers in Japan then there are Christians!
Our aim on this trip was to be a blessing to the Japanese surfers who survived the 2011 tsunami and to shine Christ’s light on them. It was amazing watching as surfer after surfer came up to Tom Curren completely star struck by the living legend. Tom took time to visit with them, sign their surfboards, T-shirts, magazines and anything else they wanted his signature on. Tom was the special guest at the Promised Land movie night and he opened up the night with amazing live music. After the movie the gospel was presented to the audience. Presenting the gospel there comes with a challenge that we do not deal with in our culture because Japanese do not have a correct concept of sin. It was explained that anytime we disobey God we are guilty of sin, and that all of us are guilty and need the forgiveness that only Jesus offers. For nearly all the Japanese people who were in the audience it would have been the first time they heard the gospel!
Our prayer is that God’s Holy Spirit convicts them of their need for Him because without the conviction why would anyone feel like they need a savior? Please pray along with us for this.
We also had an opportunity to serve the beach community by doing a beach clean-up, give out coffee to the surfers, and hand out the Bethany Hamilton DVD Heart of a Soul Surfer. At the end of our trip the local missionaries we were working with from CSJ said that our collective efforts made in-roads with the locals that previously were not there, and brought down walls in areas that had previously been erected. This was very encouraging to hear, especially since Japan is a hard country to do ministry in. For this reason it’s so important that our team was helpful and encouraging.
Our 9th annual trip to Japan was really special because not only did we pass out 600 Walking On Water DVD’s, teach little kids about Jesus and how to surf, we also premiered the Promised Land movie! Four Japanese Christian organizations rallied behind the premiere (Christian Surfers Japan, Bridges for Peace Japan, A Bridge Between Zion and Japan and Naha Baptist Church) which over four hundred and fifty people showed up to. It was by far the largest screening we have ever done in Japan! After the movie Todd Morehead, director of Promised Land, gave a message to the Christians about our special responsibility towards the Jews and also shared with those in the audience who did not know Jesus yet as their Lord that peace is only found in Jesus the Messiah. In Japan there is the wide misconception that Christianity is a western religion, when in fact it is not western at all! Jesus was Israeli! Both the movie and the message emphasized that Jesus is the Messiah for all nations, even the Japanese.
Another highlight was that the Promised Land study guide was skillfully translated into Japanese and 5,000 copies are being spread all over Japan! One of the pastors helping with the event said that she had been praying for a fresh dose of God’s Spirit to come upon Okinawa and that she believed her prayers were answered through the Promised Land premiere. God continues to work in Japan through Walking On Water mission trips and He continues to show us that He has anointed the Promised Land movie and has a plan for it far beyond what we could have imagined.0 Discuss & Comment
This past summer Walking On Water hosted 5 amazing surf camps at La Jolla Shores and Del Mar Beach in San Diego, CA. Each camp was uniquely special and more fun than we could have planned for! Many students made first time decisions to follow Jesus Christ and even more students rededicated their lives to the Lord at the camps. Bryan Jennings shares, “Year after year I am left in awe at Gods ability to change lives; Watching Him work in each of the students life is truly something to behold. Thank you to all who attended the 2012 Camps! It was a very special time!”
For those who did not attend, please check our website this February for the 2013 camp dates and details. If a year is just too long for you to wait to experience a Walking On Water Camp, then we would like to invite you to our Hawaii Family Camp this November 10-11 in Waikiki, HI with Bethany Hamilton, actress Sonya Balmores and other special guests. This is our 10th annual mission trip to Japan! This year we will be working with the organization Christian Surfers Japan (CSJ), and the local churches in Okinawa. CSJ has an amazing network of awesome believers in Okinawa and we look forward to working with them again this year.
Some of the ministry opportunities include helping out at a community Stand Up Paddle competition, passing out free WOW DVD's to the local surfers, surf coaching etc. The main event will be the premiere of Walking On Water's latest film Promised Land so much of our work in the days leading up to this event will involve promoting. Last time we were in Okinawa we had our biggest surf movie night in Japan with about 300 people coming and hearing the gospel! We hope for a similar turn out this year.
Japan is one of the least reached countries in the world with the gospel, as less than 1% of the population believes in Jesus. There are over 2 million surfers in Japan which means that there are more surfers than Christians. This is a great opportunity to use your love for surfing to reach the lost!
We are still working on the final details of the cost of the trip but it will be approximately $1200-1500. This cost includes food, lodging, transportation, materials etc for the entire time we are in Okinawa. You will be responsible for purchasing your own airfare to Okinawa.
If you are interested in this amazing short term mission trip please email [email protected] to request an application. Space is limited!0 Discuss & Comment
“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.”
In the passage above, Peter stresses the importance of keeping the Gospel at the core foundation of our daily living, “not [forgetting] that [we] have been cleansed from [our] past sins”. This good news is designed to transform our lives and bear fruit in us. Transformation is an active and ongoing process. We are never to move past or move onward from the gospel message but are to assimilate it into our daily lives, recognizing that ongoing transformation requires daily recognition of what God has done for us in the gospel.
In a study titled, The Gospel Centered Life, authors Bob Thune and Will Walker discuss the importance of living “Gospel-Centered lives” just as the title suggests. They state, “Many Christians live with a truncated view of the gospel. We see the gospel as the ‘door,’ the way in, the entrance point into God’s kingdom. But the gospel is so much more! It is not just the door, but the path we are to walk every day of the Christian life. It is not just the means of our salvation, but the means of our transformation. It is not simply deliverance from sin’s penalty, but release from sin’s power. The gospel is what makes us right with God (justification) and it is also what frees us to delight in God (sanctification). The gospel changes everything!” As we move forward, let us not put our hope in the false sense of our “goodness” but let us find rest and hope in Jesus our perfect Redeemer who is “our righteousness, holiness and redemption.” (1Corinthians 1:30) Not so that God can make much of us but so that we can be freed to make much of Him! (paraphrased from The Gospel-Centered life)0 Discuss & Comment
